Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has admitted that the past year has been the toughest period of his career after making an encouraging return to the scoresheet for Bayer Leverkusen, Footynaija.com reports.
Boniface struck twice in Leverkusen’s emphatic 7-0 pre-season victory over fifth-tier German side SF Baumberg on Saturday, ending a lengthy wait for his first goals in a Werkself shirt since March 2025.
While the brace offered an early boost ahead of the new campaign, the 25-year-old striker revealed he was simply grateful to be back playing the game he loves.

The Nigeria international endured a frustrating 12 months marked by injuries, failed transfer moves and a disappointing loan spell at Werder Bremen, where he struggled to make an impact in front of goal after temporarily leaving Leverkusen.
Reflecting on his return, Boniface admitted the road back had been far from straightforward.
“It was a difficult year for me. It is a good feeling to be back,” he said in quotes revealed by Rheinische post.
“Of course, I’m happy that I’m training again, playing again and doing what I love again.”
Although his two-goal display was another positive step in his recovery, the former Union Saint-Gilloise striker insisted he is not setting any timeline for a return to his very best.
“I don’t know. I can’t say. For me, it is about continuing. The most productive thing is to train, work on myself, and try to develop further as a player.”
After a season that tested both his body and confidence, Boniface’s latest performance offered a timely reminder of his quality.
With pre-season now underway, the Super Eagles forward will hope this marks the beginning of a fresh chapter as he looks to rediscover the form that made him one of the Bundesliga’s most productive strikers during that historic title-winning season.
