Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director, Simon Rolfes, has provided a mixed update regarding the fitness status of Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface, Footynaija.com reports.
Boniface’s recent struggles with recurrent knee problems have virtually become public knowledge following his failed moves to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in the 2025 winter transfer window and Serie A giants AC Milan last summer.
The 25-year-old striker eventually left Leverkusen for a loan spell with domestic rivals Werder Bremen but once more, his knee problems coupled with excessive weight gain limited him to just eleven substitute appearances where he failed to score a single goal.
Following the end of his loan spell at the Weserstadion, Boniface has since returned to Bayer Leverkusen where he is currently undergoing rehabilitation in preparation for the upcoming season.

“His knee looks quite good today. But his weight is a bit of a weak point,” Rolfes said in an interview with Sport Bild, via Die Rheinpfalz.
“It is our goal for him to get back into top form. Then he will have a future with many teams.
“We text each other every few days. We will never forget what Boni did for us in that championship season. He embodied exactly what we needed: that attacking mindset.”
Boniface’s incredible first season at Leverkusen

Before his frequent knee problems, Boniface was an absolutely important player for Bayer Leverkusen. The former Union St. Gilloise marksman moved to the Bay Arena in the summer of 2023 and delivered immediate impact in Germany.
In his first season, Boniface produced 30 goal contributions (21G, 9A) in 34 games, helping Die Werkself to an unbeaten domestic campaign which culminated in both Bundesliga and DFB Pokal triumphs while also picking up the Rookie of the Year award for himself.
