Former Super Eagles defender Chikelue Iloenyosi believes Nigeria have what it takes to win the 2027 AFCON in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, pointing to the depth of talent currently available to Eric Chelle as reason enough for genuine optimism, Footynaija.com reports.
Iloenyosi made 17 appearances for Nigeria in the late 1990s and has kept a close eye on the national team’s progress since Chelle took charge in January 2025.
The Super Eagles finished third at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, losing to hosts Morocco in the semi-final before beating Egypt on penalties for bronze, and have since gone on to win a fourth Unity Cup title in London with a squad built largely around fringe players and debutants.
“I believe this team can win the next AFCON,” Iloenyosi said, per Sports247.
He was equally complimentary about the environment Chelle and his backroom staff have built around the squad, describing a level of commitment he believes gives Nigeria a genuine edge heading into the next cycle.
“The coaches are committed and ready to make sacrifices for the success of the team,” he added.
His belief, however, comes with a clear condition attached. Iloenyosi was careful to point out that talent alone will not be enough to get Nigeria over the line.
“We have the players to win major honours, but discipline and consistent performances will be the key,” he said.
It is a fair point given Nigeria’s recent history. The Super Eagles have not lifted the AFCON trophy since 2013, and three different coaches oversaw a failed 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign before Chelle arrived to steady things.
If his side can carry the consistency shown at the Unity Cup into a full AFCON campaign, Iloenyosi’s prediction may not be as far-fetched as it sounds.
