Femi Azeez produced a performance of real quality on the final day of the Championship season, but it was not enough to carry Millwall into the Premier League automatically, as results elsewhere denied them a top-two finish, Footynaija reports.

The winger, on the radar of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, struck twice in a 2-0 win over Oxford United, showing composure and sharp movement at key moments.

His first came in the 34th minute when he calmly finished after being picked out by Mihailo Ivanović. Just after the break, Azeez was in the right place again, arriving at the back post to power home his second and give Millwall full control of the contest.

Yet the celebrations were muted. Ipswich Town’s convincing 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers ensured they claimed the final automatic promotion spot, leaving Millwall third on 83 points, just one short.

Attention now turns to the play-offs for Azeez and his teammates, where they will face Hull City over two legs in a bid to reach the Premier League.

Despite the disappointment, Azeez’s individual campaign stands out. The 23-year-old finished the season with 19 goal contributions, strengthening his case for international recognition with Nigeria.

While Millwall must take the longer route, Ipswich’s success has already triggered a significant transfer development involving Chuba Akpom.

The forward’s loan move from Ajax included a mandatory purchase clause, which came into effect once promotion was secured. The deal, worth around €9.3 million, means Akpom will now remain at Portman Road on a permanent basis.

It is a move that carries mixed feelings. Akpom, once a prolific scorer at Championship level, struggled for regular minutes during the second half of the season and was an unused substitute in the decisive win over QPR. He ended the campaign with two goals and one assist in 29 appearances, a modest return compared to expectations.

Still, Ipswich’s rise ensures the former Arsenal lad will have another opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League, even if questions remain about his role under manager Kieran McKenna.
