Victor Osimhen could hold the key to whether Galatasaray S.K. safely complete their job against Juventus F.C. in Turin, according to former Italy coach Vincenzo Montella, Footynaija reports.
Galatasaray arrive at the Allianz Stadium with one foot already in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 after a stunning 5-2 first-leg victory in Istanbul.
The Turkish champions overwhelmed Juventus with pace, movement and clinical finishing, recording one of the Italian side’s heaviest European defeats.
Osimhen did not score that night, yet his influence proved decisive. The Nigeria striker produced two assists and helped create constant problems for Juventus’ defence, playing a direct part in three goals as the visitors struggled to cope with his physical presence and movement.
Uncertainty now surrounds his fitness. The forward picked up a knock during training and missed Galatasaray’s unexpected 2-0 league defeat at Konyaspor. Although he travelled with the squad to Italy, doubts remain over whether he will start Wednesday’s second leg.
Montella believes that uncertainty could change the psychology of the contest.
“Osimhen is an emotional driver, even before being a technical leader for Galatasaray,” Montella told TuttoSport.
“He changes the balance of power enormously; he’s a player who changes the face of the team. If Galatasaray don’t get him back, it will undoubtedly be a huge advantage for Juve.”
Juventus face a daunting task. They must win by three goals to force penalties, or by four to qualify outright. Despite the size of the challenge, Montella insists the tie is far from finished.
“Football always leaves everything open: Galatasaray has a considerable advantage, but they have to stay in the game at all times,” he added.
“In the league they paid the price for their feat in the Champions League. Juve will face a team with a strong mentality, but comebacks happen: history tells us so.”
Past meetings between the clubs underline the tension surrounding the clash. Galatasaray hold the better overall record, yet they have never won away in Turin.
