7. Chancel Mbemba — DR Congo

DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba was central to the Leopards’ backline. He helped his team with the record of just one goal conceded in three group matches.

The Lille centre back organised the defence well, making key clearances and winning duels that kept DR Congo competitive in the group stage.

6. Bright Osayi‑Samuel — Nigeria

Bright Osayi-Samuel was Nigeria’s right-back in many matches, including the semi-final 0‑0 draw with Morocco, which Nigeria lost on penalties. He did his beat and was impressive every time he was on pitch.

5. Noussair Mazraoui — Morocco

Mazraoui was Morocco’s regular right-back. He played throughout the group stage, the semi-final 0‑0 draw with Nigeria (won on penalties), and the final. In the semi-final, he was rated 8.2/10, winning at least 12 of 17 duels, making three successful tackles, and helping keep a clean sheet over 120 minutes. He also gave an assist in Morocco’s 2‑0 win over Comoros in the group stage.

4. Moussa Niakhaté — Senegal

Niakhaté was central to Senegal’s defence, which conceded just two goals throughout the tournament. He provided aerial strength and consistently won duels. His positioning and tackling helped Senegal absorb pressure in crucial knockout matches.

3. Abdoulaye Seck — Senegal

Seck played as a right-back for Senegal and was important in defence. In the group stage, he helped keep clean sheets with effective tackling and positioning.

2. Calvin Bassey — Nigeria

Calvin Bassey was a standout defender for Nigeria and made CAF’s Team of the Tournament. In the semi-final 0‑0 draw with Morocco, he made at least 14 defensive contributions, including 10 clearances.

The Fulham defender also led the tournament in completed defensive passes and clearances among defenders. He helped Nigeria keep three consecutive clean sheets in knockout rounds. His composure, strength, and tactical intelligence made him a key man for the Super Eagles.

1. Achraf Hakimi — Morocco

Hakimi was Morocco’s defensive leader at right-back. He returned from injury to defend his country. He helped Morocco concede only two goals in the tournament. His timing and positioning were key in maintaining clean sheets in group stage wins and in the semi-final against Nigeria. The presence of the PSG star in defence, and his support with attacking transitions, made him Morocco’s backbone and the top defender at AFCON 2025.
