Nigeria have moved to end any uncertainty over the future of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, with officials confident he will remain in charge beyond the Africa Cup of Nations despite growing interest from several countries, footynaija.com reports.
Chelle’s rapid impact at the tournament has not gone unnoticed.
The Super Eagles have been the most exciting team in Morocco, scoring a competition-high 14 goals in five games.
The three-time African champions defeated Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda during the grouo stages of the tournament. Further wins over Mozambique and Algeria have pushed Nigeria into the semi-finals, where they face hosts Morocco in Rabat, and have also sparked approaches from across the continent.
Tunisia and Guinea are understood to be among those monitoring his situation, while Angola have also been credited with interest.
However, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is relaxed about the situation. An improved agreement was reached earlier in the year and is expected to take effect after the AFCON campaign, regardless of how the tournament ends. The federation believes the framework is already in place to keep the Malian coach at the helm, according to a report by OGNigeria.
Chelle only took charge at the start of 2025 on a two-year deal, but his early work has strengthened his position. The NFF set him the clear target of reaching the AFCON final, and he is now one match away from achieving that objective.
Beyond the immediate results, officials see him as central to a longer-term rebuild, pointing to the team’s growing organisation, balance and confidence in big matches. With Nigeria focused on Wednesday’s semi-final, the message from Abuja is that planning for the future is already underway, and that future is expected to include Eric Chelle on the Super Eagles bench.
