The Africa Cup of Nations has served up drama and intensity at every turn, and once again, Nigeria’s Super Eagles find themselves at the heart of it, Footynaija.com reports.

Nigeria have enjoyed a strong campaign so far. The Super Eagles progressed from the group stage before producing a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique in the round of 16.

That form continued into the quarter finals, where Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 to book a place in the semi finals. But the win over Algeria wasn’t without controversy.

At full-time, members of the Algerian camp were visibly unhappy with some refereeing decisions, particularly a few penalty appeals that were waved away. There were confrontations involving players and officials, with arguments spilling into the mixed zone area. Security personnel had to step in, and the scenes became a talking point.

Similar tensions were also reported after the quarter final between Cameroon and Morocco, which the hosts won 2-0. Cameroon officials and players were said to be unhappy with several calls.

In response, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has now released an official statement confirming that it has opened an investigation into the incidents involving both fixtures.

CAF Statement

In its statement, CAF said, “CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials and has opened an investigation into match incidents during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 quarter final fixtures between Cameroon and Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria.”

CAF added that the cases have now been formally submitted for disciplinary action.

“CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons were to be found guilty of any wrongdoing.”

The statement also confirmed that the investigation goes beyond what happened on the pitch.

“CAF is also reviewing footage of an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area.”

CAF ended its message with a strong warning on conduct at its competitions.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers. Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
