Injury update: Super Eagles and Werder Bremen star set for lengthy spell on the sidelines

Super Eagles defender Felix Agu is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a syndesmosis ligament injury during Werder Bremen’s 1-0 victory over St. Pauli at the Weserstadion last weekend, Footynaija.com reports.

The 26-year-old hobbled off just before halftime, and subsequent MRI and X-ray examinations carried out by team doctor Robert Gorzolla confirmed the severity of the injury, the club announced on Monday.

“I’m incredibly sorry for Felix. We will do everything we can to get him fit again as quickly as possible,” head coach Horst Steffen said via Bremen’s official website. “Unfortunately, however, we have to assume that Felix will be out of action for the foreseeable future.”

Agu’s setback is a significant blow for both Werder Bremen and the Nigerian national team, coming just a day after Eric Chelle named him in the Super Eagles’ 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.

The injury now rules him out of both matches with FC Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi getting the nod from Chelle to take the 26-year-old’s place in the squad. It could also jeopardize his participation at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Reports from German outlet Deich Stube indicate that the type of ligament injury Agu suffered typically requires three to six months of recovery, meaning a return before early next year looks unlikely.

This certainly comes as a massive blow for Bremen as Agu has been an ever-present figure for the Bundesliga club since the start of the season, featuring in every game they have played so far.

Agu would have also been in contention to make his first competitive appearance for the Super Eagles but with this latest development, he will have to make do with cheering on his international teammates from the sidelines.

The former Germany U21 defender will now begin a lengthy rehabilitation process, with Bremen hoping he can make a full recovery in time for the second half of the season.
