Zaidu Sanusi is pushing for a fresh start in Spain after falling down the pecking order at FC Porto, with reports confirming that Real Oviedo have opened talks to sign the Nigerian left-back on loan ahead of the 2025–26 La Liga season, Footynaija.com reports.

The 28-year-old, who was once a regular under Sérgio Conceição and won the 2022 Primeira Liga title with Porto, is now looking to revive his club career following a frustrating 2024–25 campaign in which he made just eight appearances in all competitions.

Sanusi’s fall from favour has raised eyebrows, especially considering his previous role in Porto’s domestic double three seasons ago.

With Real Oviedo recently securing promotion to La Liga after 24 years, the Spanish outfit have set their sights on Sanusi to strengthen their backline ahead of a historic return to the top flight. The left-back’s experience at the highest level, including UEFA Champions League nights and AFCON appearances with Nigeria, is believed to be a factor behind Oviedo’s interest.

However, Porto have reportedly rejected the initial offer from Oviedo, which proposed a loan move without financial compensation. The Portuguese club, still holding Sanusi under contract until 2027, are insisting on a loan fee or at least part of his wages being covered. The deal remains under negotiation.

As revealed in a report by AS España, Oviedo have initiated contact and remain hopeful of reaching an agreement.

Sanusi was part of Porto’s squad for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States in June, though he did not feature. His limited minutes last season have raised concerns about match sharpness, but his pedigree with the Super Eagles, including over 20 caps and two AFCON campaigns, makes him a valuable addition for a side seeking experience in their debut La Liga campaign in over two decades.
