Nigeria’s hopes of securing the international future of promising goalkeeper Darlington Osuchukwu have suffered a major blow as Spain has moved first, calling up the teenage shot-stopper to their under-17 national team ahead of October’s UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifiers, Footynaija.com reports.

Osuchukwu, born in Murcia to Nigerian parents, is one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in Europe and has been developing his career at Manchester United’s academy. Standing out for his reflexes, composure in penalty shootouts, and commanding presence in goal, the youngster has already attracted interest from three countries: Nigeria, Spain, and England.

According to a report by Legit.ng, the Spanish federation acted quickly, handing him his maiden under-17 invitation for a training camp scheduled between August 25 and August 28, as preparations continue for the upcoming qualifiers.

Should Osuchukwu feature in those official matches in October, FIFA regulations mean he will become provisionally tied to Spain, complicating any future switch to represent Nigeria.

The decision comes after Osuchukwu previously trained with England’s under-15 and under-16 squads. England appeared to be positioning themselves for his commitment, but Spain have stolen a march by capitalising on his birthplace connection.

His impressive performances during Manchester United’s under-16 international tour in Hong Kong, where he displayed sharp reflexes and penalty-saving heroics, played a role in drawing Spain’s selectors closer to him.

The 15-year-old began his football journey in Spain with Gazte Berriak and Osasuna before moving to England three years ago, when his family relocated. Since then, he has progressed steadily through United’s youth ranks, most recently featuring for the club’s under-15 squad in the 2023–24 campaign, where he wore the number 13 shirt.
