Bayer Leverkusen’s summer transfer strategy has been dealt an early blow after Nigeria international Victor Boniface signalled his intention to remain at the club, despite being earmarked for a potential €50 million sale, Footynaija.com reports.

Boniface was the primary player Leverkusen had planned to offload this summer, having come close to a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League in January. However, the 24-year-old striker has made it clear he has no desire to leave.

“Victor has ended the season after his trip to the national team. He’s on vacation now, will train hard during his vacation, and then return for preseason,” his agent, Atta Aneke, told Bild.

“There’s a new coach, a new setup, but still a very good team that’s back in the Champions League. Victor and I have never discussed a transfer.”

Aneke further added: “We haven’t spoken to any other club. Currently, there are no thoughts of leaving Leverkusen. Of course, you never know in football, but Victor loves playing for Leverkusen.”

New head coach Erik ten Hag had planned to keep Czech forward Patrik Schick while selling Boniface to raise funds and make way for a new backup striker. Leverkusen are believed to be monitoring 18-year-old Christian Kofane from Albacete, who could be available for around €5 million.

But with Boniface unwilling to move, Ten Hag may now have to reassess his summer plans as internal discussions loom over the striker’s future.
