Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has launched a scathing criticism of striker Nicolas Jackson following the Senegalese forward’s reckless red card in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Flamengo at the FIFA Club World Cup, Footynaija.com reports.

Jackson, introduced in the 64th minute, was dismissed just four minutes later for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Lucas Ayrton — a decision that left the Blues a man down at a crucial point in the match.

Reacting during post-match analysis on DAZN, Mikel labelled the tackle as “unbelievable” and slammed Jackson for letting his team down.

Mikel didn’t hold back

“Jackson needs to have a look at himself.”
John Obi Mikel had plenty to say after that red card.

“Unbelievable, stupid mistake you can make,” Mikel said.

“I don’t know what is going through his head, you come into the game and you’re 2-1 down at that point and your team needs you to get back into the game, and he does that.”

The Nigerian legend pointed to Jackson’s history of similar disciplinary issues, referencing an earlier red card the striker received in a key Premier League clash at Newcastle.

“He did that in the league game at Newcastle, a very important game where we need to win to get into the Champions League.

“And now he’s coming again and he’s done this. You can’t keep making mistakes.”

With competition for Chelsea’s striking role intensifying following the arrival of Liam Delap, Mikel urged Jackson to channel his frustration into performances, not petulance.

“I don’t care what his frustration is, it is a massive football club and it is about competition,” Mikel added. “If you’re angry that Delap is coming to the club and the competition with you then you have to embrace it.

“Because the only way we can be successful and win trophies is when we compete against each other.”

Chelsea, now second in their group with three points, must beat Tunisia’s Esperance in their final match to reach the knockout stage.
