3. John Utaka

John Utaka arrived in July 2007 as one of Portsmouth’s most expensive signings at the time, reportedly costing around £7 million from Rennes. He made an instant impact, scoring on his Premier League debut against Derby County. Known for his explosive pace and dribbling ability, Utaka gave defenders a tough time in his early months.

But his most iconic moment in a Portsmouth shirt came in the 2008 FA Cup final. It was Utaka’s precise pass across the box that set up fellow Nigerian, Nwankwo Kanu, for the only goal of the match. That assist sealed Portsmouth’s first major trophy since 1950 and wrote Utaka’s name into club folklore. He also scored a brace in the 2010 FA Cup quarter-final against Sunderland.

Despite some inconsistent performances in the league, Utaka contributed significantly in big games. He left the club in January 2011, but his role in that FA Cup win ensures his legacy is remembered.

2. Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, fondly called “The Yak,” joined Portsmouth on loan in January 2003 from Maccabi Haifa and fired the club to Premier League promotion. He scored 7 goals in just 14 games to help Harry Redknapp’s side win the Championship title.

His move was made permanent that summer, and Yakubu continued his form in the top flight. He scored 16 goals in the 2003–04 Premier League season, finishing as the club’s top scorer and helping Portsmouth stay up. His memorable hat-trick against Middlesbrough remains one of his best moments at Fratton Park.

Yakubu’s strength, positioning, and finishing ability made him one of the most feared forwards in the league at the time. He played a huge role in Portsmouth’s rise to Premier League stability. He left in 2005, but his 28 goals across two seasons remain among the best returns by a Nigerian striker in England.

1. Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu was already a legend when he joined Portsmouth in the summer of 2006, but he added another chapter to his incredible career at Fratton Park. On his debut against Blackburn Rovers, he scored twice and missed a penalty, instantly making headlines.

In the 2006–07 season, Kanu finished as the club’s top scorer with 12 goals in all competitions. But it was the 2008 FA Cup campaign that truly defined his Portsmouth career. He scored the winning goal in the semi-final against West Brom and again in the final against Cardiff City, handing the club their first FA Cup in nearly 60 years.

Beyond the goals, Kanu brought leadership and class to the side. Even during the club’s financial struggles and relegation battles, he stayed loyal and was a positive figure in the dressing room. Fans affectionately nicknamed him “King Kanu,” and to this day, he’s considered one of Portsmouth’s all-time greats.
