Debut delight: Germany-born defender basks in the honour of representing Nigeria’s Super Eagles

Freshly minted Super Eagles defender Felix Agu has admitted that representing Nigeria on the international stage gives a totally “different feeling” from playing club football, Footynaija.com reports.

Agu was called up for international duty with Nigeria by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle ahead of the Unity Cup and Russia friendly game. It marked the Werder Bremen wing back’s first call up since he switched allegiance from Germany to Nigeria, having previously represented Die Mannschaft at U21 level.

Agu, an unused substitute in Nigeria’s first Unity Cup game against Ghana, was handed his debut appearance in the following game against Jamaica. He featured for 83 minutes as the Super Eagles secured a 5-4 shootout win sequel to a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Speaking to WERDER.DE after getting his first taste of international football at the Brentford Community Stadium in London, Agu could not hide his delight as he opened up on what the experience was like for him.

“It was fantastic. Even though the tournament only consists of friendlies, you could still sense the rivalry,” Agu said.

“Playing for your national team is a different feeling than club football, so I’m pleased to have made my debut and that we won in the end.

“It was a good week overall. I was given a warm welcome by the team and I’m looking forward to more chances in the future.”

Agu’s addition to Eric Chelle’s defensive options was thought to be a welcome boost for the Super Eagles and the Werder Bremen man did well to leave a good impression on both his manager and the Nigerian fans following his great performance against Jamaica. He will be looking to add to his international caps when Nigeria take on Russia in three days’ time.
