Nigeria’s Flying Eagles opened their 2025 U-20 AFCON campaign with a strong 1-0 win over Tunisia in Cairo, Footynaija.com understands.

The performance was not just about the three points, it raised eyebrows across the continent, showing Nigeria, the most decorated team in U-20 AFCON history with seven titles, is ready to fight for another one.

The only goal of the game came in the 38th minute, when Auwal Ibrahim of Akwa United latched onto a low cross from Odinaka Okoro of Sporting Lagos to slot home with calmness. It was a composed finish that summed up Nigeria’s calm approach on the night.

Midfield control played a big part in the win. Clinton Jephta of Enyimba FC and Divine Oliseh from Forster Academy handled the pressure well and did not allow Tunisia to do much through the middle. They were solid in breaking up attacks and smart in pushing the ball forward.

At the back, team captain Daniel Bameyi and Adamu Maigari kept things tight. Tunisia barely had a clear shot in the first half, and even when they started to push later in the game, the duo stood firm.

Ifeanyi Ebenezer Harcourt of Sporting Lagos made one save in the 87th minute, denying Tunisia what would have been a late equaliser.

It was not just about defence, though. The Flying Eagles moved the ball with confidence, and every player seemed to understand the game plan.

It felt like a statement win. It may not have been flashy, but it was professional. With group games against Morocco and Kenya still to come, Nigeria now sits second in Group B with three points, the same as group leader Morocco.
