South Africa’s U-20 head coach, Raymond Mdaka, has commended Nigeria’s Flying Eagles for their performance in the semi-final clash at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, admitting that the match was far from straightforward, Footynaija.com reports.

Mdaka, who led the Amajita to a historic 1-0 victory on Thursday in Ismailia, Egypt, credited his players for their discipline and growth throughout the competition.

Tylon Smith scored the decisive goal in the 66th minute after Nigeria’s substitute goalkeeper Yakub Ajia misjudged a cross, costing Nigeria the match.

As reported by Completesports, the South African coach, speaking in a post-match press conference, offered high praise for both his team and their Nigerian counterparts.

“Yes, another win—congratulations to the boys. They did a fantastic job, showed great character, remained disciplined, and followed the tactical and technical plan we agreed on. We really appreciate their effort,” Mdaka said.

Acknowledging the difficulty of the match, Mdaka added,

“It wasn’t an easy game, but our boys are growing with every match—developing in character and improving in all aspects. Thank you and well done to the boys, and well done to the country.”

Despite Nigeria dominating possession and creating many chances, especially in the first half through Kparobo Arierhi and Tahir Maigana, the Flying Eagles could not find the net.

An injury in the second half to goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt forced coach Aliyu Zubairu to introduce Yakub, whose error led to the only goal of the game.

South Africa’s victory marks their first appearance in a U-20 AFCON final in 28 years. They will face Morocco at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.

Nigeria, who have already secured a ticket to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, will battle hosts Egypt in the third-place match.
