Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles are gearing up for two must-win fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Footynaija.com reports.

With Nigeria looking to recover from a shaky start, Chelle has made some bold selections, but there are still concerns about the team’s overall performance.

As the Super Eagles prepare for these crucial games, here are three key areas they must improve to get back on track.

1. Defensive Organisation

Nigeria’s defence has been a mixed bag in recent matches. While individual talents like Calvin Bassey and Ola Aina bring quality, the backline has struggled with organisation and consistency.

The Super Eagles conceded avoidable goals at the last AFCON, often looking vulnerable when pressed high. William Troost-Ekong’s experience is important, but the team needs better coordination, especially against counter-attacking sides like Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Igoh Ogbu’s inclusion could add fresh energy, but Chelle must ensure the defence stays disciplined and compact.

2. Midfield Control and Creativity Must Improve

For too long, the Super Eagles have relied on individual brilliance rather than controlling games from midfield. Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi offer experience, but Nigeria has lacked a true playmaker who can dictate the tempo.

At AFCON, the midfield often looked overrun against teams that pressed aggressively. Joe Aribo and Nathan Tella will need to step up, while Papa Mustapha’s call-up suggests Chelle is looking for new solutions.

Against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, Nigeria must move the ball quicker, control possession better, and create more clear-cut chances.

3. Ruthlessness in Front of Goal

Nigeria has some of the best attacking talent in Africa, but finishing has been an issue. Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Boniface are all deadly on their day, but the Super Eagles have wasted too many chances in recent matches.

At AFCON, they created plenty but struggled to convert consistently. Against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, they won’t get as many opportunities, so efficiency will be key.

Chelle needs to work on attacking patterns, ensuring the team is clinical when chances come. If Nigeria sharpens up in front of goal, they should have enough firepower to take maximum points.

Eric Chelle has a lot to do ahead of these qualifiers, but the Super Eagles have the talent to get the job done. A solid defence, a more controlled midfield, and sharper finishing will be key to securing the much-needed wins against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
