Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers: 3 reasons why Victor Boniface will deliver under Eric Chelle

Victor Boniface has struggled in recent months, both for Bayer Leverkusen and Nigeria, but a change in management at the national team could be what he needs, Footynaija.com reports.

Injuries and competition for places have limited his impact at club level this season, with Patrik Schick’s resurgence pushing him out of Leverkusen’s starting lineup. At the same time, his Super Eagles career has yet to take off, as he scored just one goal in 11 appearances despite all the expectations.

With Eric Chelle now at the helm, Boniface has a fresh chance to prove himself. Here are three reasons why he could finally find his feet under the new manager.

Here are three reasons why he could finally find his feet under the new manager.

1. A System That Provides Support

Both Xabi Alonso and Eric Chelle have shown they are not rigid with their tactics. Alonso, for instance, has used different setups at Bayer Leverkusen, including a 3-4-2-1 formation where two attacking midfielders support the striker, and a 4-2-3-1 system that places an advanced midfielder just behind the forward. This has helped Victor Boniface at club level, ensuring he is not left isolated in attack.

Chelle also values flexibility. While reports suggest he prefers a 4-4-2 diamond formation, he has previously used a 4-3-1-2 system, which also ensures the strikers get proper support.

If he sticks to a structure that allows Boniface to play alongside a strike partner or have an attacking midfielder close by, the Leverkusen forward will be in a much better position to make an impact.

2. A Chance to Settle and Adjust

International football does not offer the same consistency as club football. Players only have a few days to train together before matches, which makes it tough to build chemistry.

This could explain why Boniface has struggled to replicate his club form for Nigeria. But with Chelle coming in, it is a reset for everyone.

If the new manager can create an environment where players understand their roles quickly, Boniface could finally settle into the Super Eagles setup.

3. A More Attacking Approach

One of the biggest criticisms of Nigeria’s recent performances has been their lack of attacking intent. The Super Eagles have struggled to create clear-cut chances, and that has not helped the main striker who relies on good service.

Chelle has made it clear that he wants the team to play on the front foot, and that should benefit Boniface. At Leverkusen, he has shown he can press, create chances, and finish when given the right support.

If the Super Eagles start playing with more urgency in attack, Boniface will finally have the platform to deliver.

Boniface’s time with the Super Eagles has been frustrating so far, but under Chelle, things could change.

A system that suits him, more time to settle, and a more attack-minded approach could bring out his best. If he takes his chance, he could finally become the striker Nigerians have been waiting for.
