Nigeria’s backline has come under scrutiny in recent months, and with the World Cup qualifiers approaching, Eric Chelle knows he needs a solid defence to get results, Footynaija.com reports.

The Super Eagles have the attacking firepower, but without a strong foundation at the back, it could all crumble.

Here are five defensive rockstars who could step up and make the difference for Chelle.

1. William Troost-Ekong

A leader on and off the pitch, William Troost-Ekong has been Nigeria’s defensive general for years. The 31-year-old brings experience, strength, and composure to the backline. He is a game-changer. He made a huge impact for the Super Eagles in the 2023 AFCON campaign, and there is no doubt that he still has plenty to offer. With his ability to organize the defence and stand tall in big moments, Chelle will definitely lean on him again.

2. Ola Aina

Ola Aina’s energy and defensive awareness make him a key asset for Chelle’s team. The Nottingham Forest man is quick, versatile, and solid in one-on-one situations. Whether at right-back or on the left, Aina rarely puts a foot wrong. He is also comfortable pushing forward, giving Nigeria an extra attacking option down the flanks.

3. Igoh Ogbu

Slavia Prague’s no-nonsense defender, Igoh Ogbu, has been making a name for himself in the Czech league with his fearless approach. He is strong in tackles and dominant in the air—the kind of centre-back who never backs down from a battle. His ability to read danger and step in at the right moment has made him a key player for his club. Nigeria’s backline needs aggression and composure, and Ogbu offers both.

4. Tosin Adarabioyo

With Chelsea battling it out in the Premier League, Tosin Adarabioyo has quietly built a reputation as one of the most reliable defenders in England. He is tall, composed, and excellent with the ball at his feet. The 27-year old brings a level of calmness that the Super Eagles could use. His strength in one-on-one situations and aerial duels makes him a solid option if Nigeria is looking for another defensive leader in the making.

5. Calvin Bassey

Also a natural leader at the back, Bassey brings aggression, versatility, and ball-playing. His commanding displays for Fulham have shown he can handle top-level opposition, and his ability to play both as a center-back and left-back gives Chelle tactical flexibility. With 29 caps for Nigeria, he is already an established part of the squad, and his experience in the Premier League could be crucial for the Super Eagles.

With these defenders, Nigeria has a good balance of experience and talent, which should make for a solid defence. Chelleʼs challenge will be finding the right balance that will keep the defence solid while still allowing the Super Eagles to attack. If he gets it right, Nigeria’s backline could become one of Africa’s toughest once again.
