Eric Chelle has announced his first Super Eagles squad for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, marking the beginning of a new era, Footynaija.com understands.

The 39-man provisional squad reflects Chelle’s vision for the team, but how does it compare to the last list compiled by Austin Eguavoen during his short spell in charge?

Comparing both selections gives us some interesting insights into the different approaches and philosophies of Chelle and Eguavoen, and how they foresee the future of the Super Eagles.

1. Players who remain

Some Super Eagles regulars have retained their places, despite the change of manager. From Eguavoen’s squad, key defenders like William Troost-Ekong, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Bruno Onyemaechi, Gabriel Osho, Calvin Bassey, and Ola Aina are still in the mix.

The midfield remains largely unchanged, with Wilfred Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, Alhassan Yusuf, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Frank Onyeka, and Alex Iwobi keeping their spots.

Upfront, Nigeria’s attacking firepower remains intact, with Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Boniface, and Sadiq Umar all present in both squads.

This consistency shows that Chelle has identified these players as key parts of his plans, and is looking to build the team around them rather than starting from scratch.

2. Absentees from Chelle’s squad

A few names from Eguavoen’s list are missing in Chelle’s first squad. One of the biggest omissions is Victor Collins, the Nasarawa United defender who was the only home-based player in Eguavoen’s squad. In his absence Chelle has opted for Enugu Rangers strongman ifeanyi Onyebuchi in his defensive lineup.

Though most of the midfield and attack remains unchanged, some fringe players from Eguavoen’s era are missing. It remains to be seen whether this is down to form, fitness, or a change of tactics.

3. Fresh faces in Chelle’s squad

Chelle’s 39-man list brings in some new names, adding competition across all positions.

In the goalkeeping department, Chelle has expanded the number, bringing in five options—two in addition to Eguavoen’s three. The new list includes Adeleye Adebayo and Kayode Bankole. In defence, Jordan Torunarigha and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi are fresh inclusions.

In midfield, Anthony Dennis and Papa Daniel Mustapha get their first call-ups, while attack sees additions like Cyriel Dessers, Chidera Ejuke, Tolu Arokodare, Paul Onuachu, and Akor Adams.

Also, one of the highlights of Chelle’s list is Ahmed Musa, who makes his return to the Super Eagles squad, bringing leadership and experience.

With these inclusions, Chelle is sending a message that he values depth and competition, especially up front, where Onuachu and Adams bring unique qualities to the table.

Eric Chelleʼs first Super Eagles squad introduces fresh names while keeping the core from Eguavoen’s last list. Some experienced players have made way for new faces, while a few familiar names remain.

With more options in defence and attack, Chelle’s list shows a change in selection, and it will be interesting to see how his squad fares compared to Eguavoen’s setup.
