Galatasaray hero Victor Osimhen believes the Super Lig defending champions deserved their narrow 2-1 victory over Caykur Rizespor on Monday night, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles striker netted Galatasaray’s two goals as they emerged winners following a hard-fought match. His first goal was a great header in the 47th minute to put the Super Lig leaders in front.
Osimhen then grabbed another in the 86th minute, expertly heading home Mario Lemina’s corner-kick to win the game for Galatasaray.
Monday night’s double took Osimhen’s Super Lig tally to 14 goals in 18 appearances, while his overall stats stand at 19 goals and 5 assists in 24 appearances across all competitions.
Speaking after the win, the 26-year-old striker could not hide his delight, praising the togetherness of the team and appreciating the fans for pushing them to a well deserved victory at the Caykur Didi Stadyumu.
“I think it was a very important and very difficult match,” Osimhen said as per Galatasaray.org.
“We won, we think we won in a way we deserved. I want to congratulate the whole team. I also want to thank our fans.
“This victory and their support gave us a lot of morale. We are continuing our winning streak in this way.”
With Monday’s win, Osimhen’s Galatasaray maintained their six-point gap over closest rivals Fenerbahce, who they will square up against in a week’s time at RAMS Park in Istanbul.
In the meantime, the Turkish champions will turn their attention to Thursday’s Europa League tie against Dutch opponents AZ Alkmaar. They must overturn a three-goal deficit at RAMS Park to stand a chance of progressing to the Round of 16.
Osimhen was a notable absentee in Galatasaray’s 4-1 defeat at the AFAS Stadion in Netherlands. The Nigerian hitman will almost certainly be on the roster on Thursday and he will be heading into that game in red-hot form.
