Former Super Eagles midfielder Edema Godwin Fuludu has made a passionate case for the return of veteran Nigerian forward Ahmed Musa to the national team setup as the Super Eagles look to secure their 2026 World Cup ticket, Soccernet.football reports.
Musa, who currently plies his trade in the Nigeria Professional Football League with Kano Pillar, has yet to feature for the Super Eagles of Nigeria since featuring in a friendly match against Guinea back in 2023.
Nigeria find themselves under immense pressure following their abysmal start to the World Cup qualification campaign. After recording three defeats and one draw in their opening four games, the Super Eagles must win all their remaining matches to stand any chance of qualifying.
Ahead of Nigeria’s crucial qualifying fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe respectively, Fuludu, who won eight caps for the Super Eagles between 1991 and 1995, has called for the inclusion of former Premier League star Musa in the squad, insisting the Pillars forward could play a crucial role for the team.
“The Super Eagles are in dire need of results to put our World Cup campaign back on track, and I feel someone like Ahmed Musa has a crucial role to play,” Fuludu told Guardian Nigeria.
“Many Nigerians are superstars when it comes to football, and I always feel sad when some people jump to conclusions that players are too old to play for the national team.
“If Ahmed Musa can come back to play in the Nigerian league and stabilise Kano Pillars on the table, there is nothing wrong in including him in the Super Eagles squad for the World Cup qualifiers.
“We have seen situations where older players became saviours for many teams in tight situations. We all know Ahmed Musa as one of the most dedicated players to play for the national team. After all, he has not officially announced his retirement from international football. I feel he still has a role to play in the Super Eagles if the coach wants him.”
Musa is currently Nigeria’s most capped player with 110 appearances to his name. The former Leicester City forward boasts 18 international goals and his experience could well prove to be a vital source of inspiration for the Super Eagles’ misfiring frontline.
