In his first match since losing his mother on New Year Day, Stanley Nwabali delivered an excellent performance to lead Chippa United to a tough 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows in the Nedbank Cup round of 32, Soccernet.football reports.

Nwabali, who tragically lost his mother on January 1, 2025, returned to training on January 16 after being granted compassionate leave.

While he was an unused substitute in Chippa United’s 2-2 draw against Marumo Gallants two days later, the 26-year-old regained his starting role for the Golden Arrows clash.

His display featured five exceptional saves, proving instrumental in the Chilli Boys’ progression to the next round.

Despite conceding a contentious goal—later shown in replays to be a potential officiating error—Nwabali’s commanding presence in goal kept his team in the contest.

Reflecting on his return, he took to social media after the encounter, writing: “Back on the pitch with an important win. I have to say a big thank you to everyone that has been checking up on me at this very difficult time of my life. All thanks to my club and teammates for all the support. Let’s continue making history.”

Nwabali has had to show super-human endurance and resilience after suffering the loss of both parents in the span of two months.

His father’s passing during the November 2024 international break and his mother’s death on New Year’s Day have plunged him into an emotional struggle. On social media, he described the ordeal as the “worst year of my life already,” but his resolve has remained unbroken.

Now captain of Chippa United, Nwabali’s influence both on and off the pitch has been vital for the club. His leadership and performances have sparked speculation linking him with Kaizer Chiefs, as well as interest from European clubs. For now, however, his focus remains on aiding Chippa United’s quest for a strong league finish.

Access denied ❌. Great team performance, penalty save and a clean sheet. Keep on resting dad❤️#nwabali #safehands #rip pic.twitter.com/OAjS7tvpB5

Though he admits to being “not mentally stable,” Nwabali has found solace in football, explaining, “When you’re on the pitch, you try to put all your pain behind you and move on.”

Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper at the Africa Cup of Nations last year, Nwabali will aim to be at his best form when the Super Eagles return in March for the World Cup qualifiers.
