Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that influential striker Victor Boniface will miss the club’s crucial Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund due to injury, Soccernet.football reports.

Speaking at Thursday’s pre-match press conference, Alonso expressed disappointment over the Nigerian forward’s unavailability but emphasised the importance of patience in his recovery process.

“We were hoping that he would be back in training on January 2nd. That’s a shame,” Alonso admitted, as quoted by Bild. “We have to be patient so that he gets back to his best shape and we get a better feel for the injury. The most important thing now is that we support him.”

Boniface, who has been pivotal in Leverkusen’s push for the Bundesliga title this season, was initially expected to return early in the new year.

However, Alonso confirmed that the striker is unlikely to feature in Leverkusen’s next two home fixtures against Mainz on January 14 and Borussia Mönchengladbach on January 18.

“Normally, it’s not enough for next week,” Alonso said, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the forward’s recovery timeline.

When asked about Boniface’s return date, the former Real Madrid midfielder deferred to the club’s medical team. “I don’t know. It’s better to ask the doctor, but Boni needs a little more time, I can say that.”

Boniface’s absence is a significant setback for Leverkusen. The Nigerian has been a standout performer this season, contributing vital goals and assists as the club mounts a serious title challenge.

Despite this blow, Alonso expressed confidence in his squad’s depth and adaptability. “We have to focus on the players available and ensure Boni gets the time he needs to return stronger,” he remarked.

The match against Borussia Dortmund is a critical fixture in the Bundesliga title race.

Without one of their most dynamic attackers, Leverkusen will face an uphill task against their formidable rivals.
