Graham Potter has offered new insights into his short-lived tenure as Chelsea manager, revealing what he believes was his biggest mistake and why the role became “impossible” to handle, Soccernet.football reports.

Appointed in September 2022 as Todd Boehly and Clearlake’s first managerial choice following Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal, Potter’s time at Stamford Bridge lasted only seven months.

Tasked with overseeing a massive transformation at Chelsea, which involved record spending on young talent, Potter ultimately left the club with the lowest points-per-game record of any Chelsea manager.

His exit came in April 2023 amid growing pressure and poor results.

In a rare media appearance as a pundit on SkySports‘ Monday Night Football, Potter reflected on his time at Chelsea and the cultural challenges he faced.

“The culture at Chelsea over a period of time has got them success, so I respect that,” he said. “Perhaps the mistake I made was that I thought with new ownership there would be a change of culture.”

Potter acknowledged the difficulties of balancing Chelsea’s winning mentality with the demands of developing a youthful squad.

“Before the World Cup, we’d only lost three matches… but the world was closing in and we were close to crisis,” he explained. “Chelsea were used to winning and competing. It was easy to say it must be the coach… Maybe he was the problem, and I could understand that.”

Despite the turbulent environment, Potter admitted he could have done better in managing the transition. “There was a lot of adjusting. It’s impossible to play everybody in every minute. Finding that stability was a bit of a struggle,” he said.

“You live and you learn. It was a very turbulent period in Chelsea’s history. I wish I had done better.”
