Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Erling Haaland’s potential involvement in Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League clash against Brentford, revealing that a decision will be made closer to the match, Soccernet.football reports.

Haaland has been on compassionate leave following the death of Ivar Eggja, a close family friend, and has not been with the squad throughout the week.

However, the Norwegian striker was spotted in training on Thursday, raising hopes of his return to action.

Speaking about Haaland’s situation, Guardiola said: “It was a tough moment for him and his family. It was sad news. He was close to him and his family. 59 years old. Our thoughts are with him and his family. We will see tomorrow if he is mentally and physically able to play.”

Eggja, a long-time family friend who was the best man at Alf-Inge Haaland’s wedding, had a strong bond with Erling, and his passing has deeply affected the Manchester City forward.

Haaland expressed his grief on social media, posting a heartfelt tribute to Eggja. “You are a legend, Ivar,” he wrote. “Words cannot describe how much you meant to me! Words cannot describe how much you will be missed! Thank you for everything, you madman. We will see each other again. Rest in peace, Ivar.”

Haaland has been in outstanding form this season, scoring seven goals in the first three Premier League matches, including two consecutive hat-tricks.

However, Guardiola is mindful of the emotional strain his striker is under and will assess his readiness both mentally and physically before making a final call on his participation against Brentford.

The match is crucial for City as they look to extend their lead at the top of the table, potentially going five points clear of Arsenal before the Gunners play on Sunday.

Last season, Haaland scored the decisive goal in this fixture, and Brentford’s manager, Thomas Frank, acknowledged the challenge of facing the prolific striker. “It’s close to impossible,” Frank admitted. “A lot of teams have tried to neutralise him but he’s a great player.”

If Haaland is unable to play, Guardiola may need to explore alternative attacking options, with City having sold Haaland’s backup, Julian Alvarez, to Atletico Madrid.

Yet, the Premier League champions have shown they can win without a traditional striker, with Guardiola’s false 9 system proving effective in the past.
