“It was an important moment”- Onana reflects on penalty save as Manchester United return to winning ways

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana considers his penalty save an ‘important moment’ in the match, as the Red Devils secured a convincing 3-0 victory over 10-man Southampton at St. Marys, Soccernet.football reports

United, coming off back-to-back defeats, nearly conceded in the 33rd minute, but Onana guessed correctly to deny Cameron Archer’s weak spot-kick.

The Old Trafford giants quickly punished their newly promoted counterparts, with goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Marcus Rashford giving them a 2-0 lead at halftime, before Alejandro Garnacho sealed the win later on.

Onana was pleased to see Rashford end his 12-game goal drought, but more importantly, the Cameroonian was delighted to get back to winning ways.

“We had a tough season last year, and he was not at his best,” Onana told TNT Sports. “But today, he showed he’s a great player – one of the best in the world.

“That’s football, that’s life. It’s now how you fall, it’s about how many times you stand up again. I’m really happy for him. Hopefully, he will score many more for the team.

On bouncing back with a win, he added: “Every game when you lose is like it’s the end of the world. You have to stay strong, stay together and keep fighting.

“It was very good to save that penalty. It was an important moment for us.

“The most important thing for us is victory. We had a great game and a clean sheet. Hopefully, we will continue playing like this.”

Today’s victory made it two wins from four games for Manchester United, with Onana keeping his second clean sheet of the season. United’s next Premier League stop will be at Selhurst Park where a winless Crystal Palace side awaits.
