Toni Kroos has delivered a final farewell message following the commencement of his official retirement from football after Germany’s Euro 2024 exit, Soccernet.football reports.

Die Mannschaft suffered an agonizing 2-1 defeat to Spain in extra time during the quarter-finals, ending their hopes of winning the European Championships on home soil.

The host nation’s exit also marked a significant moment for Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos, who had announced in May that he would retire after Germany’s campaign.

Kroos accumulated 34 trophies throughout his playing career with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and the German national team but he was unable to fulfill his dream of winning the European Championships.

Nonetheless, he stands by his decision to retire and has issued a statement expressing gratitude to those who have supported him.

“So that’s it,” Kroos wrote in a post on Instagram on Sunday.

“But before I take a break and at least try to realise what happened over the last 17 years I don’t want to miss the opportunity to say thank you to everyone accepting me how and who I am.

“Thanks to all my fans around the world for your unconditional support. Thanks to all my clubs and coaches for believing in me. Thanks to all my teammates for making me feel welcome anytime. Thanks to my friends for always being honest with me no matter how successful I became.

“Thanks to my brother Felix for always being my number one fan. Thanks to my kids for being my biggest motivation to bring the best out of me. Thanks to my beautiful wife Jessica for being you. Never change. This success wouldn’t have been possible without you.

“And last but not least – thank you football! You beautiful game. And, you’re welcome! Over and out.”
