“He’s here on merit” – Martinez defends Ronaldo’s spot in Portugal’s Euro 2024 line-up

Portugal’s manager Roberto Martínez has explained why he included Cristiano Ronaldo in the squad for Euro 2024, Soccernet.football reports.

At 39, Ronaldo is one of the oldest players at the tournament. This will be his sixth appearance at the European Championship, extending his record. He debuted in 2004 and helped Portugal win their first title in 2016.

However, Ronaldo will not be the main focus for Portugal this time. Younger players like Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Rafael Leão, Bruno Fernandes, and Gonçalo Ramos will lead the attack.

Despite this, Martínez still values Ronaldo highly. The forward was the top scorer in the Saudi Pro League this season. Martínez emphasized that Ronaldo’s inclusion is based on merit.

“Cristiano is here on merit. No one is here because of their name. Cristiano scored 51 goals in 50 games and has shown great consistency with the national team, scoring nine goals in the qualifiers. He can score and create space in defences. He has adapted his game over the years. He is here on merit,” Martínez said, as per MaisFutebol.

Ronaldo also believes the current team “deserves to win a competition” like the European Championship. Martínez agreed, saying Portugal needs to prove they can go far.

“The qualifying phase showed the team has a good attitude and mentality. We won ten games, but this tournament is different. We have to show our level. Cristiano’s experience is vital, having played in five European Championships. His presence in the locker room is important. But as a team, we need to face challenges and see if we have what it takes to go far,” Martínez added.

Portugal will face Czechia this Tuesday at 8 pm in Leipzig.
