Top 5: Brest’s best players of the 2023/2024 season

Stade Brestois 29 enjoyed an exceptional 2023/2024 Ligue 1 campaign, producing so many amazing performances and a few late shows over the course of the season to record their highest ever finish in the French league since their inception in 1950.

Les Pirates battled to a third place finish on the last matchday of the Ligue 1 season, beating Toulouse to overtake Lille who were just ahead of them on goal difference but ended up drawing their final game against fifth place Nice.

The Ligue 1 overachievers will be competing among Europe’s elite in the Champions League for the first time in their history. Soccernet.football has ranked Les Pirates’ most outstanding players of the campaign.

5. Bradley Loko

Locko was one of Les Pirates’ standout players, playing a significant role in Brest’s historic Ligue 1 campaign, which saw them finish third and qualify for the Champions League.

In 35 Ligue 1 games, Locko registered three assists and contributed to Brest’s 15 clean sheets. The 22-year-old Frenchman was a revelation this season, and he has rightfully garnered interest from Premier League clubs.

4. Kenny Lala

The 32-year-old Frenchman who signed for Brest in the winter transfer window of 2023 has gone on to become one of the most crucial members of Les Pirates’ setup, featuring heavily for his team this campaign.

Kenny’s experience in defense proved valuable for Brest as they charged to a third place finish. The full-back was also very involved in attack for Les Pirates contributing 2 goals and 3 assists in 33 Ligue 1 appearances.

3. Mahdi Camara

Camara was one of Brest’s most important players this season as he put in eye-catching displays in midfield for Ligue 1’s surprise packages, contributing significantly on both ends of the pitch.

The 26-year-old midfielder was a dominant figure in the middle of the park for Les Pirates, breaking up opposition play and protecting the back line. He also contributed in attack with 7 goals and 3 assists across 32 Ligue 1 appearances.

2. Romain Del Castillo

Castillo was one of Les Pirates’ most outstanding players in what was a remarkable season, the 28-year-old proved to be a formidable presence upfront for Brest and he fired his team to their first ever Champions League qualification.

The Frenchman provided a credible attacking threat for Brest off the right flank, establishing himself as a reliable source of goals and assists as Les Pirates maintained an impressive form in the league.

Castillo contributed 16 goal involvements across 33 Ligue 1 appearances for Brest.

1. Pierre Lees-Melou

The Frenchman enjoyed the best season of his career this campaign, following a remarkable season with Brest in which he was the chief architect of everything good that happened on the pitch for Les Pirates.

Lees-Melou was exceptional for Brest this campaign and despite having his season cut short by an injury he sustained at the start of May, the 30-year-old was still able to hold down a spot in the French national team ahead of the Euros.

The French international contributed four goals and four MOTM performances for Brest this season. His overall impact on Les Pirates’ remarkable season earned him the Ligue 1 Player of the Season award.
