Taiwo Awoniyi: Super Eagles striker gives verdict on Nottingham Forest exit rumours
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has addressed increasing speculation about a potential move away from Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window, amid reported interest from another Premier League side West Ham United, Soccernet.football reports.

Awoniyi has been relegated to off-the-bench appearances for Forest this season, with the Nigeria international making the starting XI just twice in 17 Premier League appearances. The 27-year-old has scored only one goal so far this season and looks far from forcing his way back into Nuno Espirito Santo’s thinking.

Awoniyi’s limited opportunities at the City Ground this term has understandably made him the subject of persistent transfer speculations and reports of a Forest bid for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa added more fuel to the rumours. However, the Nigerian laughed off talks of his potential exit in an exclusive chat with SportsBoom.com.

“Transfers are part of football, and there will always be speculation. But my focus is entirely on Nottingham Forest,” the Super Eagles forward insisted.

“This is a team with a lot of potential, and I want to be here to help achieve something special. I’m not thinking about leaving; I’m thinking about how I can contribute more to the success of this club.”

The former Union Berlin striker believes he still has the trust of his coaches at Nottingham Forest and is patiently waiting for his opportunity to contribute to the club’s impressive Premier League campaign.

“I’ve spoken with the coaches, and they’ve been very supportive. They see me as an important part of the squad, even if I’m not starting regularly.

“They’ve emphasised the importance of staying ready and being a team player. It’s reassuring to know that they value what I bring to the table, and it pushes me to keep giving my best.

“It’s been tough, no doubt. As a player, you want to be on the pitch contributing every game. But I’ve learned that patience and hard work are key.

“My motivation comes from knowing that my opportunity will come, and when it does, I want to make it count. I train hard, keep my head down, and focus on being ready when called upon.

“The success of the team motivates me, and I’m proud to be part of it, even if my role has been smaller than I hoped.”
