Sevilla are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Nigerian striker Akor Adams from Ligue 1 club Montpellier during the January transfer window, Soccernet.football reports.

Respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that negotiations between the two clubs are in advanced stages, with discussions nearing a positive conclusion. If finalized, the 24-year-old will make a permanent switch to the Andalusian outfit.

Adams initially made headlines in Ligue 1 with a brilliant start to his Montpellier career, scoring seven goals in his first nine league appearances. However, the forward has struggled to maintain that early form, managing just four goals in his subsequent 38 Ligue 1 matches.

This season, Adams has netted three goals in 15 appearances, but his recent exclusion from the squad in Montpellier’s defeat to Monaco has fueled speculation about his future.

Before his stint in France, Adams made a name for himself at Norwegian side Lillestrøm, where he scored an impressive 28 goals in 50 matches across all competitions. That prolific run in Scandinavia earned him a move to Montpellier in the summer of 2023, with hopes of making a bigger mark in European football.

If the deal is finalized, Adams will reunite with compatriot Chidera Ejuke, who joined Sevilla on a free transfer in the summer.

However, another Nigerian at the club, Kelechi Iheanacho, is rumoured to be on his way out after a challenging start to life in Spain. Sevilla see Adams as a more physical and faster upgrade to Iheanacho.

Sevilla will hope Adams can recapture his early Montpellier form and help bolster their attack as they look to climb the La Liga table in the second half of the season.
