John Obi Mikel has openly criticised Enzo Maresca’s decision to bench Malo Gusto during Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Ipswich Town, describing the young French defender as “Mr Consistency” and likening him to club legend Cesar Azpilicueta, Soccernet.football reports.

Monday night’s defeat at Portman Road was Chelsea’s second consecutive loss, leaving the Blues winless in their last three matches.

Despite this poor run, they remain three points clear of Newcastle United in fifth.

Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel expressed his confusion at Maresca’s decision to field Axel Disasi at right-back instead of Gusto, especially when natural right-back Josh Acheampong was also available.

“I like Malo Gusto. For me, he’s Mr Consistency, a little bit like [Cesar] Azpilicueta, isn’t he?” Mikel remarked. “But I have no idea why the manager sometimes drops him and plays Disasi there.”

Maresca’s tactical gamble backfired spectacularly as Disasi endured a tough evening, eventually being substituted with 15 minutes remaining.

The decision has left fans and pundits alike questioning the manager’s reasoning, particularly as Gusto has proven to be a reliable presence in a turbulent season for Chelsea.

Since joining Chelsea under the club’s new ownership, Gusto has filled the void left by Reece James’ recurring injury troubles.

At just 21 years old, the Frenchman has shown flashes of brilliance, though dips in form have occasionally crept into his performances.

James has recently returned to full fitness, but with Selhurst Park looming on Saturday, it remains uncertain whether he will start against Crystal Palace.

Gusto, despite a mixed showing against Fulham, is expected to reclaim his place as Chelsea look to reverse their fortunes.
