Red-hot Nigerian striker George Ilenikhena is hoping his impressive Super Eagles debut against Madagascar can be the beginning of a regular involvement with the senior national team, Footynaija.com reports.
The 20-year-old forward marked his first appearance for Nigeria with a goal as the Super Eagles came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo.
Ilenikhena was handed a starting role alongside Akor Adams and repaid Eric Chelle’s faith by restoring parity shortly before halftime with a left-footed finish.

The Al-Ittihad striker had already been making headlines at club level before receiving his first senior call-up, with his impressive start to the 26/27 campaign earning him an opportunity with the Super Eagles.
Ilenikhena has scored six goals and provided two assists in nine appearances for the Saudi Pro League side this season, including a match-winning brace against reigning champions Al-Nassr.
Speaking after his international debut, the former AS Monaco forward expressed his delight at opening his Nigeria account on his first appearance.
“I feel very happy and proud to score my first goal with this national team. It is a very big step for me in my young career. I am very happy and hope for more,” Ilenikhena told Sports Digital Africa.
“I will continue to work hard and do my best for the team on the pitch to always be in the team.”
Ilenikhena also revealed that he grew up watching Super Eagles legend Jay-Jay Okocha before turning his attention to Victor Osimhen, while describing his partnership with Akor as a positive one.
“I watched Okocha and now Victor Osimhen,” he said.
“With Akor, we have a really good relationship on the pitch and off the pitch. So to play with him is very good.”
With Guinea-Bissau next on Tuesday, Ilenikhena will now be hoping to make his second consecutive start for Eric Chelle’s side as they set sights on a perfect start to their AFCON qualifying campaign.
