Taiwo Awoniyi has given his assessment after Coventry City suffered another defeat on their return to the Premier League, with the Super Eagles striker insisting Frank Lampard’s side had a clear approach but could not turn their performance into points, Footynaija.com reports.
Coventry returned to the top flight this season after winning the Championship under Lampard, ending a 25-year wait for Premier League football at their home ground. Their first game back ended in a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Arsenal, leaving the Sky Blues looking for a response in their first home league match since 2001.
That homecoming brought Hull City to the CBS Arena, with the visitors also returning to the Premier League after winning promotion through the Championship play-offs. Hull had already made a strong start by beating Manchester United 2-0 in their opening game.

Awoniyi had another chance to lead Coventry’s attack after scoring and assisting in the Carabao Cup win over Plymouth Argyle, and he started against Hull as Lampard looked for his first league points of the season.
Coventry created opportunities and were the more threatening side for long periods, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis kept them out before Liam Millar broke away to score in the 82nd minute. The 1-0 defeat left Coventry without a point after their opening two league matches.
Awoniyi explains Coventry’s approach
Speaking to BBC CWR after the defeat, Awoniyi said Coventry had gone into the game with a clear attacking plan.
“The game plan was quite clear, to play with intensity and try to score goals as quickly as possible,” the Nigerian striker said.
Awoniyi felt Coventry had done enough to take something from the match, even though Millar’s late goal settled the contest.
“I think we were unlucky today and I think we were the better side but unfortunately only the three points counts.”
The defeat means Coventry are still searching for their first Premier League point since returning to the division, while Hull have taken maximum points from their opening two matches.
