Nigeria’s Super Falcons have crashed out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after their 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals on Sunday evening, Footynaija reports.
With the defeat, the ten-time continental champions have been handed a difficult new route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The loss at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals, with Cameroon’s 19-year-old Myriam Nyadjou scoring the only goal through a powerful free-kick in the first half.
The Falcons pushed hard after the break and made tactical changes as they searched for an equaliser. However, Cameroon’s goalkeeper stood firm and helped her team protect the clean sheet.
The defeat has major consequences. Nigeria will not receive an automatic World Cup ticket through the WAFCON semi-finals and must now take another route to Brazil.
The Falcons will first play in a classification playoff against another quarter-final loser on August 13. The winners of the two classification games will earn Africa’s two places in the FIFA inter-confederation playoff tournament.
That means Nigeria’s World Cup dream is still alive, but there is almost no room for another mistake.
If the Falcons win their August playoff, they will enter the six-team global tournament later in the year. FIFA will use its rankings to seed the teams, with the two highest-ranked nations going straight to the final round.
Nigeria’s strong position in the FIFA rankings could therefore become a major advantage. If the Falcons receive a top seed, they would need to win only one more knockout game to secure a place at the 2027 World Cup.
However, the Cameroon defeat has already created unwanted history. For the first time in a centralized WAFCON tournament, Nigeria have failed to reach at least the semi-finals. The Falcons now have to recover quickly because their World Cup journey depends on what happens next.
