Christantus Uche’s encouraging return to action for Getafe has been interrupted by a fresh injury after the Super Eagles midfielder suffered a right knee contusion during Thursday’s pre-season friendly against AS Monaco, Footynaija.com reports.
The 23-year-old had been working his way back into José Bordalás’ plans after returning to Getafe this summer, following the end of his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
However, his latest outing ended painfully after a reckless challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa forced him off the pitch on a stretcher. The referee immediately showed Mawissa a straight red card as concern spread around the stadium.

According to Spanish journalist Álvaro Ramos, the Nigerian has suffered multiple tears in his right knee involving both the ligaments and meniscus. He will undergo surgery and is expected to miss the whole campaign.
It is a cruel setback for Uche, who had only recently returned to Getafe after Crystal Palace decided against making his loan move permanent. The midfielder had gone back to Spain hoping to rebuild his career under José Bordalás and fight for a regular place ahead of the new La Liga season.
The injury also comes at a difficult time for the Super Eagles. Uche had broken into the senior national team and remained one of the younger midfielders being closely watched as Eric Chelle continues shaping Nigeria’s squad for the future.
For now, football takes a back seat. The immediate focus is on surgery and recovery, with Uche facing a long rehabilitation before he can think about returning to competitive action.
