George Ilenikhena could be on his way back to Europe just a few months after joining Saudi club Al-Ittihad, Footynaija reports.
The 19-year-old Nigerian striker has attracted interest from three clubs, with West Ham United, Genoa and Schalke 04 all making official enquiries about signing him.
Reports say Al-Ittihad are willing to let the youngster leave on loan, with the deal likely to include an option to buy. That makes a move easier for interested clubs, especially after the Saudi side paid around €33 million to sign him from AS Monaco in a few months ago.
Ilenikhena has found it difficult to settle in Saudi Arabia. He has made only six appearances for Al-Ittihad, with five of those coming from the bench. Limited playing time has reportedly convinced him that returning to Europe is the best step for his development.
West Ham are looking to strengthen their attack after raising significant money through player sales and see the Nigerian as a long-term investment. Newly promoted Bundesliga side Schalke 04 are also keen but prefer a loan because of his high price tag. Meanwhile, Serie A club Genoa believe his pace, strength and potential could add a new dimension to their frontline.
Although still a teenager, Ilenikhena is already one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards. He has earned big-money moves during his rise from Amiens to Royal Antwerp, Monaco and Al-Ittihad. He also made history by scoring UEFA Champions League goals against FC Barcelona while playing for both Antwerp and Monaco.
A successful return to Europe could also improve his chances of becoming a regular in Nigeria coach Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad. The Malian tactician is believed to hold Ilenikhena in high regard and sees him as a long-term replacement for Victor Osimhen.
