Former Eredivisie champions Ajax have agreed a loan deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers for Super Eagles forward Tolu Arokodare, Footynaija reports.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the Dutch giants have signed the 25-year-old on a season-long loan with the option to buy him permanently for €22 million, plus bonuses. Ajax will pay a loan fee, cover the striker’s full salary, and Wolves could also receive an extra £500,000 if the club qualifies for European football during Arokodare’s stay.
The move gives the Nigerian international a chance to restart his career after a disappointing spell in England. Although clubs including Fiorentina, Genoa and Trabzonspor showed interest, Ajax moved quickly to complete the deal after making Arokodare their top attacking target.
The Amsterdam club are convinced the powerful 6ft 6in striker still has plenty to offer. Before joining Wolves, he impressed across Europe, scoring goals in Latvia, France and Belgium. His best season came with Genk, where he scored 23 goals in all competitions and finished as the Belgian league’s top scorer, performances that earned him a move to the Premier League.
Things did not go as planned at Wolves. He scored six goals and provided two assists in 38 appearances as the club struggled and eventually suffered relegation to the Championship. Reports also suggested he had disciplinary issues during pre-season.
Now, Ajax are hoping a move to the Eredivisie will help Arokodare regain his confidence. If he rediscovers his best form in Amsterdam, the Dutch club could decide to make his move permanent next summer.
