Morocco believe the gap to reigning champions Super Falcons has never been smaller ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Footynaija reports.
The Atlas Lionesses have finished runners-up in the last two tournaments and are determined to go one step further on home soil. Their coach, Jorge Vilda, says his players are ready to battle every second as they chase a first WAFCON title and a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“Our Lionesses will give their all on the field. They will fight to the end, with commitment and determination. No one will be able to accuse them of a lack of effort. We will do everything possible to make Moroccans proud of their national team,” Vilda told AS.
The former Spain coach also believes his squad has enough quality to challenge the continent’s best.
“We don’t feel pressure, but rather excitement to showcase the level of this team and its players. We have some of the best footballers in Africa and even one of the best in the world, recognized by FIFPRO and CAF,” he added.
The Nigeria-Morocco rivalry has changed dramatically over the years. Nigeria won 8-0 in 1998 and 6-0 in 2000, but Morocco shocked the Super Falcons in the 2022 semi-finals by winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Nigeria responded in unforgettable fashion in the 2025 final, coming from 2-0 down to beat Morocco 3-2 through goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini. With Morocco hosting again, another thrilling chapter could soon be written.
