Chippa United have confirmed the return of the Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali five months after the two parties parted ways in circumstances that raised questions about the timing and wisdom of his decision, Footynaija.com reports.
Nwabali left the Eastern Cape club by mutual consent in February, having submitted a formal transfer request shortly after returning from the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, where Nigeria claimed bronze.
At the time, he was refreshingly honest about his situation.
“I’m going to be very honest with you, there is no contract in front nor is there a club,” he told reporters. “I’m not guaranteeing you that I’ll have a new club today or tomorrow.”
That turned out to be prophetic. The move he had walked away from a secure contract to pursue never materialised.
Nwabali spent four months as a free agent, training privately while speculation linked him with clubs across Africa, the Middle East and even English Championship side QPR.
None of it produced a signed contract. As recently as last month, reports indicated that negotiations with an unnamed Saudi Arabian club were underway, with a deal expected in the following weeks. It did not happen.
It is believed that his absence from competitive football has cost him his place in the Super Eagles squad. Eric Chelle, who had consistently backed Nwabali as his number one, had no choice but to look elsewhere.
Maduka Okoye stepped in, kept ten clean sheets for Udinese in Serie A and carried that form seamlessly into the national team, making Nwabali’s absence almost unnoticeable in the end.
Now Chippa have welcomed him back. The club’s announcement confirms that Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape after “taking time away.”
What that time cost him in terms of his Super Eagles standing and transfer value is a harder conversation.
In four years at Chippa, Nwabali made 76 appearances and kept 25 clean sheets, becoming club captain and earning the recognition that eventually brought Nigeria’s national team scouts to Gqeberha. That platform built his career once. He will be hoping it can do so again.
