Stanley Nwabali’s long wait for a new club may finally be drawing to a close, with sources indicating that a move to Saudi Arabia is now the most concrete option on the table for the Super Eagles goalkeeper, Footynaija.com reports.
Nwabali has been a free agent since parting ways with Chippa United in February, a decision that raised eyebrows given he had only recently signed a contract extension with the South African side. His stock had risen following his displays at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he had established himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers on the continent.
The expectation was that a new club would follow immediately. Instead, the search has dragged on for months, with interest from Israel, Tanzania and South Africa all mentioned at various points without producing a concrete deal.
The picture appears to have changed. According to sources close to the player, as reported by Soccer Laduma, a Saudi Arabian club has now emerged as the clear frontrunner.
“At the moment, Saudi Arabia looks like the most likely destination. The club involved likes his profile and believes he can add experience and quality to their squad. There could be some developments by the end of this week if everything goes according to plan,” a source said.
Per the report, the source also credited Nwabali’s international record as a key factor in attracting the interest.
“Playing regularly for Nigeria has helped him a lot. Clubs look at his international experience and performances and see him as a goalkeeper who has competed at a very high level. That has made him appealing to potential suitors,” they added.
Nwabali himself is understood to be encouraged by the development.
“He is excited about what is happening and is looking forward to seeing how things unfold in the coming days. Like any player, he wants a good challenge and the opportunity to continue competing at a high level,” the source concluded.
His extended absence from club football had already begun to cost him in the Super Eagles setup, with Eric Chelle preferring active goalkeepers during earlier international windows, making a quick resolution all the more important for the 30-year-old.
