Victor Osimhen’s Super Lig title win with Galatasaray has drawn congratulations from across Nigeria’s public space, but few responses carried the kind of political weight that came from presidential hopeful Peter Obi, Footynaija.com reports.
Osimhen was the defining figure in Galatasaray‘s dramatic 4-2 victory over Antalyaspor on Saturday, a game in which the Super Eagles striker twice turned the tide after his side had fallen behind.
Antalyaspor had led through Soner Dikmen just before half-time, and after Mario Lemina equalised early in the second half, the visitors restored their advantage in the 62nd minute. Osimhen stepped up from the penalty spot in the 66th minute to level again, then sealed it with a second goal deep into the closing stages.

It was Galatasaray’s fourth consecutive Super Lig title, their 26th overall, and the club are now four points clear of Fenerbahce with one game remaining.
The achievement prompted a statement from Obi, who finished third in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election and remains one of the country’s most prominent opposition voices.
Congratulating Osimhen on his official channels, Obi praised the striker’s “resilience, discipline, and talent,” describing him as “a proud ambassador of Nigeria on the global stage.”
‘Nigeria is blessed with countless talents like Osimhen’

The former governor of Anambra state went beyond the congratulations. Weaving his political message into the tribute, he argued that Osimhen’s success should serve as a reminder of what Nigeria consistently fails to nurture at home.
“I have often spoken about the transformative power of sports and the immense opportunities it offers to young people. This is why the persistent neglect of the sector in our country is deeply regrettable,” he wrote.
“The truth is that Nigeria is blessed with countless talents like Osimhen, waiting for the right leadership, support, and environment to rise, excel, and bring glory to the nation.”

Obi closed with a restatement of his broader political vision.
“A new Nigeria, where all sectors develop simultaneously for the balanced growth and health of the nation, is possible.”
Osimhen has now recorded 15 goals and five assists in 22 league appearances for Galatasaray this season, a campaign that has only strengthened his case as one of the most complete centre-forwards in European football and intensified speculation over where he will play next season.
