Taiwo Awoniyi has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s Matchweek 35 Player of the Week award after producing a decisive display to power Nottingham Forest to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Footynaija reports.

The Super Eagles striker, making just his second league start of the campaign, delivered a performance of real authority on a landmark occasion; his 100th appearance for Forest.

Awoniyi struck twice and played a key role in a third goal, to inspire Forest to a win that eases their relegation worries. The former Liverpool man wasted little time making an impact, heading Forest in front inside two minutes with a powerful header that stunned the home crowd.

The Nigeria international won a penalty later in the first half, which was converted by Igor Jesus to double Forest’s advantage. Early in the second period, he added his second goal of the afternoon, effectively putting the result beyond doubt and sealing a vital three points for his side.

More significantly, his display lifted Forest six points clear of the relegation zone, strengthening their hopes of Premier League survival.

Awoniyi has now registered four goals and one assist in 14 league appearances for Forest this term.

The forward now finds himself among a competitive shortlist that includes standout performers from across the division.

Arsenal duo of Viktor Gyökeres and Bukayo Saka, Man City’s Jeremy Doku as well as Man United’s Kobbie Mainoo are among the contenders for the honour.

Voting remains open until midday on Wednesday, with the winner to be confirmed later the same day.
