Diego Simeone has offered a measured but encouraging update on Ademola Lookman after the forward was forced off during Atlético Madrid’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad earlier this month, Footynaija reports.
Lookman, who has been a lively attacking presence since arriving from Atalanta in the winter window, lasted just over an hour before signalling discomfort and requesting to be substituted.
The Nigeria international later underwent medical checks, which confirmed an adductor muscle issue. Initial fears of a serious tear were quickly eased, with scans showing only minor swelling.

Simeone admitted the decision to withdraw the winger early may have prevented a more damaging setback.
“Lookman still has to wait,” he said on Friday as per Marca. “Luckily, we brought him out at La Cartuja; otherwise, it could have been worse. But it’s not a big problem.”
The 26-year-old has already missed Atlético’s recent league fixture against Elche CF and will also sit out the upcoming clash with Athletic Bilbao. Club medical staff have placed him on an individual recovery programme, keeping him away from full training as a precaution.

The aim is for both to return against Arsenal.

Despite his absence domestically, there is growing confidence within the club that Lookman could return in time for the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal on April 29. The relatively mild nature of the injury, combined with a short recovery window, has given Atlético hope of having one of their most dangerous attacking options available.
Lookman’s importance has been clear in recent weeks. His pace, direct dribbling and eye for goal have added a different dimension to Simeone’s side, particularly in high-stakes matches. With Atlético carefully managing not only his fitness but also that of striker Alexander Sørloth, the focus is firmly on ensuring key players are fully ready for the visit of the Premier League side.
