Former Nigerian midfielder Mutiu Adepoju believes in-form Celtic striker Kelechi Iheanacho can still play a pivotal role for the Super Eagles after reigniting his career in the Scottish Premiership, Footynaija.com reports.
Iheanacho’s last involvement with the Nigeria national team came in May 2025 during the Super Eagles’ Unity Cup triumph in London.
Since then, he has been a notable absence from subsequent squads that played the last stretch of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the March international friendlies.

These high-profile omissions came as a result of persistent struggles with injury that consequently left the former Manchester City and Leicester City star unable to maintain consistent form and fitness levels.
However, Iheanacho appears to be finding his feet again at Celtic Park, following crucial contributions in his recent outings for the Hoops and Adepoju believes this new-found lease of life firmly puts the 28-year-old forward back in contention for opportunities with the Nigeria national team.
“Kelechi has always been a very good player and a good scorer who has done very well over the years,” he told Footy-Africa. “Unfortunately, these past few years he has not been finding it easy and all that.
“I’m happy that he is coming back and he is doing very well in Celtic. I just believe he will be able to sustain that and continue.
“Experience matters, and if he is doing very well and I believe if the handlers of the national team see and find him worthy, then he can still come back. I believe he has that ability to come back to the team.”
Iheanacho made his Super Eagles debut back in January 2013 and since then, he’s amassed 58 appearances while also registering 32 goal contributions.
