Alex Iwobi has offered a revealing insight into the mindset that has helped Victor Osimhen rise to the very top of world football, Footynaija reports.
The Fulham playmaker has described his Super Eagles team-mate’s hunger to win as both relentless and, at times, extreme.
Speaking on the Best Mode On podcast, Iwobi painted a vivid picture of a forward driven by an almost obsessive desire to come out on top, even in the most routine training sessions. According to the former Arsenal man, that mindset is central to Osimhen’s development into one of the game’s most feared strikers.
“Every time in training, he’s always getting hurt in training because he’s got to put his leg or his head into something that he shouldn’t do. He’s always been fighting,” Iwobi said.

Osimhen’s aggressive approach is not limited to physical commitment alone. Iwobi suggested that the striker’s competitiveness can spill over into gamesmanship, all in pursuit of victory.
“He always wants to win, and that mentality is sick. It’s sick. Sometimes it can be over the top because in training, he would like to fight and make sure he’s winning.
“Then sometimes he cheats, and he knows he’s cheating just to win. But it’s just a sick mentality.”
Despite acknowledging those extremes, Iwobi made it clear that such traits are part of what separates Osimhen from others. The forward’s ability to create opportunities through sheer determination, rather than refinement alone, is something he believes makes him stand out.
“I’m not surprised he is where he is right now. Some would say he’s not polished, he’s a bit raw, but Victor will create himself five chances a game, just himself, just from hard work and running.”
Iwobi also emphasised Osimhen’s fearlessness, insisting that reputation counts for little when the striker steps onto the pitch.
“He doesn’t care who you are. He doesn’t care if you’re [Virgil] van Dijk, if you’re a guy from non-league, no disrespect to non-league, he will fight. He will treat the game in the Champions League as if he’s playing with his brethrens.”
With more than 30 international goals already, Osimhen continues to lead Nigeria’s attack and was instrumental as the Super Eagles clinched bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
