Eric Chelle has spoken publicly for the first time about the leaked contract proposal that sparked debate over his future with Nigeria, Footynaija reports.

The Franco-Malian tactician insists he remains fully committed to the Super Eagles role despite ongoing negotiations.

The coach still has a year left on his agreement, but renewal discussions began after the National Sports Commission reportedly encouraged the Nigeria Football Federation to open talks over an extension. Momentum slowed when details of Chelle’s proposed terms appeared in the media, including claims of a €130,000 monthly salary and improved working conditions.

Speaking in an interview shared online, Chelle confirmed the document was authentic but admitted confusion about how a private proposal became public.

“At the moment we’re speaking, of course I am still the coach of Nigeria,” he explained.

“I still have one year left on my contract. In fact, just yesterday I was in a meeting by video with my technical staff to work on the squad list for the March matches. So yes, I am still the coach of Nigeria.”

He added: “Today, if I’m being honest, I don’t really know. The first question I ask myself is how this document could have ended up in the media. That’s the question I’m asking myself.”

Chelle also clarified that the reported salary figure was requested in dollars and would include payments for his technical staff, stressing that negotiations remain open and flexible.

On the reported salary and demands
“When you talk about 130,000, first of all it’s not euros, it’s dollars. And what people don’t know is that in Africa, with the national teams I’ve worked with, I have to pay my technical staff myself. So all those people have to be paid — and… pic.twitter.com/VSMkXIq5T9

Away from contract matters, he dismissed speculation linking him with Olympique de Marseille following the exit of Roberto De Zerbi, before the French club appointed Habib Beye.

“I have had absolutely no contact with the Olympique de Marseille management.”

Since taking charge, Chelle has guided Nigeria to encouraging results, winning the Unity Cup and securing bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after beating the Egypt national football team, with their only defeat coming via penalties against the Morocco national football team.

Preparations now turn to a March invitational tournament featuring the Iran national football team, Jordan national football team and Costa Rica national football team as Nigeria continue building towards their next competitive challenge.
