Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has opened up on his decision to make a loan switch from Brentford to Coventry City during the winter transfer window, Footynaija.com reports.
Onyeka took a bold step in leaving the Premier League for the EFL Championship after struggling to get playing opportunities at the G-tech Community Stadium during the first half of the season.
The Nigeria international snubbed interest from a number of clubs, including Birmingham City, Sheffield United and Valencia to join Frank Lampard’s Coventry towards the tail end of the transfer window.
Reflecting on his reason for choosing the Sky Blues, Onyeka revealed that a phone conversation with Lampard was sufficient enough to convince him to move to the Coventry Building Society Arena.

“My agent told me about it early in January but I was just focussing on AFCON so we didn’t speak much about it,” he said in quotes revealed by Coventry Live.
“And then I think two weeks before the transfer deadline I had a call with Frank Lampard and that’s when everything started. I spoke to him and could see the club is going in the right direction, the club is going up and it was something that I wanted.
“And also for family reasons, I want to stay close to them, and also a lot of challenges like this. So that was the reason why I chose Coventry over other clubs.”

Onyeka is yet to make his debut for Coventry City having been an unused substitute during last weekend’s goalless draw with Oxford United. He’ll be in contention to wear the club’s colours for the first time when they host Middlesbrough in a top of the table clash this weekend.
